An ITIN not used on a federal tax return for three years in a row expires and must be renewed.
Questions answered
ITIN application FAQs
Answers about ITIN eligibility, Form W-7, processing time and fees.
What is an ITIN number?
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is a nine-digit number the IRS issues to people who need a U.S. taxpayer ID for federal tax purposes but are not eligible for a Social Security number. It always begins with the number 9.
How do I apply for an ITIN number?
Complete IRS Form W-7, attach original or certified copies of your identity documents, and include the federal tax return you need the ITIN for, unless an exception applies. Send it to the IRS by mail, or apply through a Certifying Acceptance Agent or an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center.
What is the IRS ITIN processing time?
The IRS usually sends a letter with your ITIN in about seven weeks. It can take nine to eleven weeks during peak tax season, from January 15 to April 30, or if you apply from outside the United States.
What is the difference between an ITIN and an EIN?
An ITIN identifies an individual for tax purposes. An EIN identifies a business, such as an LLC. A non-U.S. owner can get an EIN for their LLC without an ITIN, but may need an ITIN to file their own U.S. tax return.
Does a non-U.S. LLC owner need an ITIN?
Not always. Forming an LLC and getting its EIN do not require an ITIN. You may need one if you must file a U.S. individual tax return, claim a treaty benefit, or a bank or payment provider asks for a U.S. taxpayer ID.
Do I have to send my original passport to the IRS?
If you mail the application yourself, the IRS needs original documents or copies certified by the issuing agency. A Certifying Acceptance Agent can verify a passport for you, so the original can stay with you.
How much does it cost to get an ITIN?
The IRS does not charge a fee to apply for an ITIN. FormLLC’s ITIN application support is a $250 flat service fee for the eligibility review and application help.
